Mar 10 2007, 6:38 PM EST Reichert has two additional years to record safe political votes, and his campaign for 2008 began as soon as he took his first votes in the 110th Congress. Darcy Burner is starting her campaign earlier with the intent to raise more money and her profile. She has the experience of the last campaign to help make her a better campaigner. Ross Hunter has to want this. At this time it is not clear he does. Should he run, he has the potential to be a tough challenger to both Reichert and Burner as he is considered a moderate Democrat and potentially a good political fit for the district. He has the ability to connect with audiences with his friendly and casual approach. Hunter will be the one to watch. Although Ventrella will be familiar to many voters in the region, can he be a viable candidate in this race? If he can prove he can be then the Democratic party will have a very strong primary race should all the candidates stay in it that long. 6 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 2 2008, 5:36 PM EST Well, I guess I should update this. By the end of last summer this became a two candidate race as the Democratic Primary challengers realized that all the momentum and money was going to Darcy Burner. Reichert still tries to position himself as a moderate, but his allegiance to the Iraq war, his anti-women's right to choose position, his dismissal of global warming, and ignorance of science and technology will not bode well for him in the tech savvy, progressive moving 8th district. Incumbents always have an advantage, but Burner is raising more money than Reichert (even out raising Reichert the quarter that Bush came to town to help out), and the Republican party is cash poor making it harder for them to defend Reichert like they did at the end of the campaign last time. Meanwhile Burner has taken the profile of this race to a national level which will help her, and of course Democratics are energized like never before for this presidential election which will bring out more Democratic voters than ever before, which will help all down ticket candidates.
