Background information
District Map
Because of its relatively small population, the entirety of Wyoming is represented by a single congressional district.
Repulican Representative Barbara Cubin has held the seat since she was first elected in 1994. Although Wyoming has traditionally been a conservative state (Bush carried WY with 69% in 2004), Cubin, who is a staunch conservative, has had more trouble getting re-elected in recent years than was anticipated. In 2006, she squeaked by Democratic opponent Gary Trauner (48.3% to 47.7%). Libertarian candidate Thomas Rankin garnered 4% of the vote. The race was considered a toss-up by most analyists.
Cubin has an unfortunate habit of saying and doing incredibly stupid things, which may factor into her high unpopularity: 47%. See the controversy section of Wikipedia's entry on Cubin for more.
Note: Trauner ran as a libertarian Democrat in 2006.
