Background information
After West Virginia's one-term Democratic governor Bob Wise retired in 2004, Democratic candidate Joe Manchin succeeded him, garnering an impressive 63% of the vote, over Republican candidate Monty Warner. Manchin had originally planned to challenge Wise in the Democratic primary, but Wise ultimately decided to retire instead, avoiding the primary. Manchin, a moderate Democrat, had a 80% approval rating in January 2006.Some speculate that if West Virginia's Democratic Senator Robert Byrd (the oldest incumbent in the nation, re-elected to another 6-year term in 2006) is unable to complete his most recent term around the time that Manchin's own term is up, Manchin might run to replace him, leaving this Governor's seat open in 2008 (though Manchin has not publicly commented on this possibility).
