Background information

Governor Christine Gregoire (D) was elected in 2004 by 133 votes over Dino Rossi after three vote counts in the closest margin in a governor's race in Washington history. The outcome was subsequently challenged in a Chelan County court by the state Republican Party, but the case was decided in the Democrats' favor.

Gregoire, previously the 3-term Attorney General of Washington state, entered office and began a stunningly successful legislative session, passing bills such as:

• election reforms
• improving health care for the poor
• transportation funding
• a gay civil rights bill
• strict new environmental laws

Gregoire's opponent from 2004, former state Sen. Dino Rossi (R) of Sammamish, is challenging her again. While Gregoire's approval ratings have risen dramatically since 2005, Rossi still is likely to mount a vigorous challenge in 2008.
