Background Information

Senator John Cornyn, a one-term Republican incumbent, is due for his first re-election campaign in 2008. Cornyn is a staunch conservative and Bush-ally, in favor of constitutionally outlawing equal rights for gay Americans, in favor of strict abortion criminalization, has a consistent voting record against public schools, is a major proponent of big-oil corporations. Cornyn has been rated 100% by the Christian Coalition, an "A" from the NRA, and given very low marks from national teachers associations, NARAL, enviromental organizations, and senior citizens organizations.

According to current 2K8RT information, as many as five Democrats may seek to unseat Cornyn in an unusually contested March 2008 primary.

FEC numbers indicate that Cornyn raised just under 10 million dollars for his first election campaign in 2002. The most recent SurveyUSA polling (11/12/06, MoE 4.1%) indicates that Cornyn has an approval rating of 45% (42% disapprove). This makes him the 89th most popular Senator, or the 11th most unpopular Senator.

Note: Cornyn may have ties to convicted mega-lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
