North Carolina

Once a "Solid South" Democratic state, North Carolina has been trending towards the Republicans on the federal level since the 1970s. However, Democrats still maintain a registration advantage and continue to dominate the state legislature as well as local politics in many places.

Much of North Carolina politics below the federal level is still divided along Civil War lines, with Confederate counties in Eastern North Carolina often voting Democratic in statewide elections and Union counties in Western North Carolina voting Republican.

The North Carolina Congressional delegation is currently 7 Democrats and 6 Republicans.
Recently, Northeastern transplants with socially progressive views have been moving to North Carolina, making urban and suburban pockets of the state less politically conservative.
