New York

New York was traditionally a swing state, with New York City leaning Democratic and much of Long Island and the Upstate region leaning Republican. However, ever since the early 1990s when Long Island, as well as urban portions of Upstate shifted decisively towards the Democrats, New York is no longer considered to be in play in most federal elections and is now considered to be a solidly Democratic state, with Al Gore and John Kerry carrying it with margins of 60% and 58% respectively.

Republicans still continue to dominate in many rural portions of Upstate, including the Adirondacks and the Southern Tier areas, as well as some suburban areas, such as Saratoga and Oswego Counties. Over the past decade, Democrats have been making inroads in the Hudson Valley Region, which has recently seen a large migration of left-leaning voters from southern parts of the state.
