The current incumbent is Frank R. Lautenberg (D). However, speculation has arisen that Sen. Lautenberg may retire following the 2008 elections. Possible Democratic replacements include Rep. Rob Andrews (NJ-01), Rep. Frank Pallone (NJ-06), Rep. Bill Pascrell (NJ-08), Rep. Steve Rothman (NJ-09), and Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12). Possible Republican replacements include State Sen. Tom Kean, Jr., who ran against and lost to Sen. Robert Menendez (D) in the 2006 senatorial election, and United States Attorney for New Jersey Chris Christie.
