Background Information
In 2006, Democrat Michael Arcuri was elected to this rural, Central New York-based district by about a 9 point margin over former Republican State Senator Ray Meier. The seat was open after Representative Sherwood Boehlert, a twelve-term Republican from Utica retired.
In a neutral year the district leans mildly Republican, as Bush carried the 24th district with 52% of the vote. However, districtwide registration has been trending Democratic, and Tompkins, Broome, as well as Otsego Counties have been shifting to the left in recent years.
