Jeanne Shaheen's announcement that she will run for US Senate now has many political pundits saying that this leans toward the democratic side! Looks like the Dems are in a good position for the takeover of another seat!

But I was part of the 2006 Democratic takeover in New Hampshire, working on the GOTV campaigns. The people of New Hampshire are utterly fed up with the Republican Party, its scandals, and its wars. I wouldn't be surprised to see any of the above mentioned candidates defeat Sununu in November 2008.

Interestingly enough, Sabato's crystal ball-which has been right on every Senate race in the last two elections-says that Jeanne Shaheen "is probably going to run." If she's in the race, I think the Dems will probably take this seat.

I was just about to add Hirshberg to the list of potential candidates after reading a Union Leader article echoing Roll Call's sentiments (RC link is subscription only, see Union Leader link at the end of this comment for non-subscription only article), when I saw that he had already been added. I love that he is listed as "" though. Hilarious. FYI, for those that don't know and are a bit confused, he's the CEO of Stonyfield Farm, a popular New Hampshire organic yogurt company.

If Steve [Marchand] decided to run, he'd be an excellent candidate," said N.H. Democratic Party Chairwoman Kathy Sullivan. "He's a very smart, very personable and he's a very hard worker, and I think he'd be a great candidate."
Former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, who lost to Sununu in 2002, recently told the Boston Globe she has not ruled out a rematch against Sununu. The article also mentions state Sens. Maggie Hassan, Joe Foster and Peter Burling as potential candidates, as well as Marchand.

SurveyUSA's November 2006 voter approval poll shows Sen. John Sununu's approval rating as 47% approve, 44% disapprove. An incumbent whose approval rating is less than 50% this far out is ripe for unseating. And after the 2006 elections, Democrats are well-positioned to prove again that New Hampshire is a progressive state. Go for it!
You can follow the tracking polls yourself at: http://www.surveyusa.com/50State2006/State100USSenatorApproval061122.htm.
