With Democratic incumbent Governor Mike Easley set to retire due to a term-limit, several candidates are vying for this seat (though considerably more Republicans than Democrats). Wikipedia suggests that there are as many as 9 prospective Republican candidates (some have announced, others have not) who may be seeking this seat. May primaries will thin the field considerably.
