1. Mark Kirk has always had his career in Washington, DC and working federal issues. To my knowledge he's never expressed an interest in going to Springfield.
2. Mark Kirk will likely lose his seat either by the voters or redistricting by 2012.

Therefore, it probably makes a certain amount of sense for Kirk to run against Durbin. He'll probably get the GOP presidential candidate to promise him a plum cabinet or deputy cabinet position if the GOP wins POTUS in 2008. If the Dems win he can become a lobbyist or an executive at some military contractor.

Since the Green Party achieved greater than 5% in the 2006 governor's race there will be a primary to determine who will be the Green Party nominee.
