Background Information
With the 37th District's massive registration advantage in favor of Democrats, Laura Richardson easily won the special general election (runoff) on August 21, 2007, having defeated St. Sen. Jenny Oropeza in the open primary two months earlier (as well as nine other Democrats, including Rep. Millender-McDonald's daughter). Richardson's election continues the district's tradition of electing African-American women, even though the district is now plurality Latino.District Map
