Background information

Traditionally a Republican state (Bush carried AZ 53%-46% in 2004), Arizona has shown signs of becoming more Dem-friendly recently.

Arizona's moderate Republican Representative Jim Kolbe announced he was retiring in 2006, which left the AZ-08 seat open. Democratic candidate Gabrielle Giffords (a former state senator) won 54% of the vote, in a four-way race. Republican Randy Graf was her most serious opponent, garnering 42% of the vote. David Nolan, a Libertarian, and Jay Quick, an Independent, got 2% each.
